Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: Christina Zilber

Christina Zilber, founder and creative director, Jouer Cosmetics

If you've been reading my blog recently, you might have noticed a Jouer Cosmetics takeover in pretty much all of my postings - I can't get enough of this beauty brand! After visiting their LA headquarters a few weeks ago and meeting the founder and creative director of the company Christina Zilber, I knew I wanted to feature her on Stilettogal - and I was beyond excited when she agreed to do an interview with me! Get the inside scoop on what a day in Christina's (gorgeous!) heels is like, how she manages her work/life balance, and what beauty items all female entrepreneurs need to be carrying in their handbags!

Hillary Gadsby: What inspired you to start up Jouer Cosmetics?

Christina Zilber: A makeup artist filled an empty palette with some favorite lipsticks of mine and I became hooked on the idea of makeup on-the-go. I began looking for palettes that suited my likes and needs but was frustrated by the limitations of product and color choice in the market. I set about creating a line of easy, fun and portable colors sold individually where the customer could then build her own customized palette.

HG: What's a day in the life of a founder and creative director like for a beauty brand?

CZ: No day is ever the same! Each day presents new challenges and projects.  From press events and testing products in development, to meeting with makeup artists and retailers, every day offers excitement. I absolutely love what I do and feel very lucky to do it!

HG: I know I'm a huge fan of the company, but what makes Jouer stand out from other makeup brands?

CZ: Our practical, portable packaging - allowing you to customize your beauty. Sometimes the simplest ideas aren't represented in the market. I found my niche when I kept trying to find a makeup palette with a concealer inside; simple but impossible to find. I wanted to carry a palette with what I wanted, no more, no less. The idea of real customization is at the heart of the line and it doesn't exist anywhere else. There are a slew of makeup artist lines, but I approach beauty a little differently than a professional artist. I’m technique challenged and abhor sitting at a makeup counter so I can relate to what women really want with their makeup.

HG: What has been an unexpected business lesson you learned a great deal from?

CZ: How to juggle being a single mom while running my own business! I always feel like I’m making a compromise with either my kids or my company. But my children get to see their mom work hard at something she loves and they live through my successes as well as failures. And, my company’s brand and vision wouldn't be the same if I weren't a crazy, busy mom. These two aspects of my life may battle for my time but I've learned that they each contribute to each other in a beautiful way.

HG: Fill in the blank: my favorite shoes are a pair of _____ because ________.

CZ: Givenchy Leather Sandals because they work with jeans for everyday or dress up with a skirt.  The heel height won’t kill me, so I can look good and last the day.

HG: What has been your biggest shoe splurge?

CZ: My first pair of Chanel ballet flats, when I was in my late twenties.  They were worth the splurge because I still have them – they're classic!

HG: On a final note, what are 3 makeup must-haves all women in business need to be wearing (and carrying!) in their handbags?

CZ: 1) Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint - My ultimate beauty must-have! It gives a flawless, glowing complexion instantly.  We have mini sizes available, which are great for travel or keeping in your purse.

2) Jouer Age-Repairing Concealer  – Nothing gives away long days and late nights more than dark circles.  Use a concealer with peach undertones to neutralize the bluish-gray under your eyes

3) A great everyday lip gloss to instantly pull a look together.  Try Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Bare Rose  in a neutral sheer rosy pink!
